ICIRR hosts Silky Shah - Immigrant Justice Meets Abolition
Join us on August 29th from 6:15 to 8 PM for a live stream panel discussion with Silky Shah on her new book Unbuild Walls: Why Immigrant Justice Needs Abolition. This event, part of our ongoing work to build solidarity among Black, brown and immigrant communities, will explore the intersections of immigrant rights, racial justice, and prison abolition.
Shah, the executive director of Detention Watch Network, presents a compelling argument that immigration enforcement and the prison-industrial complex are deeply interconnected systems of repression. She offers a comprehensive overview of U.S. immigration policy and its ties to mass incarceration over the past 40 years, and documents the stories of individuals, organizations and communities that have successfully resisted detention and deportation, including the campaign led by ICIRR and others that effectively ended ICE detention in Illinois in 2021.
