ICIRR Urges US House to Reject Dangerous Goodlatte Immigration Bill, Vote for Clean DREAM Act

CHICAGO (June 13, 2018)--Last night House Speaker Paul Ryan’s office announced that he would bring to the House floor two immigration bills: a bill sponsored by Judiciary Committee Chairman Bob Goodlatte and a “compromise” bill whose provisions were still to be announced. Following is the statement by the Illinois Coalition for Immigrant and Refugee Rights (ICIRR):

"Millions of immigrants and their families across Illinois and the United States are being terrorized daily by the Administration’s crackdown.  Nearly 800,000 younger immigrants are especially anxious that the protection they now have under the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program could soon end. Yet rather than allow a floor vote on a clean version of the DREAM Act to provide a permanent solution for DACA grantees, Speaker Ryan is instead bringing to the floor a bill by Rep. Goodlatte that will only put them and their families further at risk of arrest, detention, deportation, and separation. ICIRR urges the Illinois House delegation to roundly reject this dangerous bill or any other bill that would increase deportations or further fund arrests, detention, family separation, or the border wall. As Speaker Ryan determines which other immigration bill he will bring to the floor alongside the Goodlatte bill, we also urge him to move forward with a strong version of the DREAM Act that will protect DACA recipients while doing no further harm to our families, neighbors, and communities."

ICIRR is dedicated to promoting the rights of immigrants and refugees to full and equal participation in the civic, cultural, social, and political life of our diverse society.
