Today 60 leaders from Illinois arrived in Washington DC to meet with the Illinois congressional delegation and demand protection for immigration families, to pass a clean DREAM Act and  save Temporary Protected Status!  Follow their progress on twitter @icirr & facebook for immediate updates!

Lawrence Benito, ceo of ICIRR's remarks last night:

Tonight, we are sending 60 community leaders to Capitol Hill to meet with the Illinois Delegation and demand that they defend our communities, and to tell them simply: the time is NOW to pass a clean Dream Act, to save Temporary Protected Status or TPS, and protect all immigrant families.

Right now, young people who would qualify for the Dream Act are being picked up by immigration agents, and TPS-holders are being told to get out of the country they have lived in for many years. In Illinois, the futures of more than 41,000 young people who have DACA, as well as their families, are up in the air.

Everyday Congress delays action to protect immigrants, more people are in danger of being deported.

But we will never let Trump and Sessions and their nationalist agenda break our spirit.

As many of you know, this is not the first time ICIRR’s members have boarded a bus to Washington DC to fight for immigrant rights with our national allies. You all are joining a historic movement for immigrants because hopefully you believe like I do, that when the voices of  communities join together, change happens.

Tomorrow we’ll gather with 15,000 immigrant leaders from across the nation on Capitol Hill to rally for the rights and the dignity of all immigrants, and to show the nation that Illinoians believe in and demand humane policies that benefit not only immigrants, but all people who desire to live in a more just society.

We gain courage from our collective humanity in the face of hate, and strength in our community as we vow to never give up the fight.
