Yesterday, we had a great press conference with SEIU H.C.I.I., National Immigrant Justice Center, South Suburban Immigrant Project, Arab American Family Services, United Congress of Community and Religious Organizations, Chicago Teacher’s Union, Fight for $15, Women’s March, HANA Center, P.A.S.O West Suburban Action Project, Syrian Community Network, Southwest Organizing Project, United Food and Commercial Workers, Cambiando Vidas, Brighton Park Neighborhood Council, Jewish Council on Urban Affairs and Latino Policy Forum!
Our communities sent a message loud and clear: On May 1st, tens of thousands of Chicagoans will rise up in resistance to demonstrate the power, resilience and strength of workers, immigrants, communities of color and their allies in America. A broad coalition of communities and organizations will gather a week ahead of massive May Day mobilizations to call on immigrant and refugee communities, black-led organizations, workers, women’s groups and allies to begin the month of May marching in the streets, and end it  with a bill known as the TRUST Act (SB-31), on Governor Rauner’s desk.
The TRUST Act’s main provisions include: barring federal immigration agents from entering schools and health facilities if they do not have court warrants, barring local law enforcement from engaging in immigration enforcement, assisting immigrant survivors of crime who seek legal protection, and barring local participation in a federal registry based on country of origin or religion. May Day will also take place a little over a week following US Attorney General Jeff Session’s sent out letters to the City of Chicago and Cook County threatening to withhold federal grant dollars if they fail to cooperate with immigration enforcement. The threat is largely viewed as unconstitutional, and immigrant groups and allies will be calling on municipalities to fiercely challenge this threat.
We'll see you on May 1st!  RSVP here!
