These Newspaper Ads Ask a Very Important Question...

Why is Congressman Emanuel Betraying our Friends and Families?

To the left is a copy of the Spanish newspaper ad published in Hoy on November 15th, 2007.

The ad was paid for by Blue America and approved by the Illinois Coalition for Immigrant and Refugee Rights.

Illinois’ Fifth Congressional District Representative Rahm Emanuel is under attack for his willingness to abandon humane immigration reform and sponsor enforcement-only legislation with the anti-immigrant candidate Tom Tancredo. The Illinois Coalition for Immigrant and Refugee Rights was shocked and dismayed by his remarks in a recent Chicago Tribune article, where Rep. Emanuel calls immigration "the new third rail of politics." This came just months after the Congressman pledged to move a comprehensive reform bill forward last spring. Most recently, he has recruited Democratic House members to support a harsh enforcement-only bill that provides no path for undocumented immigrants to gain legal status. Immigrant leaders and national netroots activists have joined forces to places ads criticizing Rep. Emanuel in Spanish, Polish, and Korean media.

Why Is Congressman Rahm Emanuel Betraying Our Friends and Families?

"The immigrant community is not on Congressman Emanuel's radar, even though the 5th Congressional District is one of the most diverse districts in the nation. In his own District, legal permanent residents struggle to become US Citizens as they fight red tape, higher fees, and citizenship delays – you name it, and his constituents are still waiting for him to show leadership on immigration reform. If our own Congressman will not champion ourrights as immigrants, who will?"-- Monika Starczuk, Resident 5th Congressional District

Many of our community and religious leaders understand the dreams of our families, friends and neighbors to make a better life for their children. Why can't Representative Rahm Emanuel? With our families and communities under attack, we need strong leadership -- not political cowardice.

Call Congressman Emanuel now at (773) 267-5926 and tell him "Stop being afraid to fight for immigrants, and start acting like a real leader
