White House, Congressional Republicans Fail America

Government Shutdown Shows Lack of Leadership to Find Bipartisan Solutions

The following is the statement of the Illinois Coalition for Immigrant and Refugee Rights (ICIRR) regarding the federal government shutdown:

Had the White House and the Republicans who run Congress shown true leadership, our federal government would be fully open, and we would have a permanent solution for young immigrants and full authorization for the Children's Health Insurance Program (CHIP), both urgent, popular, bipartisan measures.  Instead, the White House manufactured a crisis by rescinding DACA protections, throwing hundreds of thousands of younger immigrants into turmoil and anxiety.  As its price for fixing DACA, the White House insisted on an unpopular and divisive border wall that even the White House chief of staff conceded is unwise and unnecessary.  The White House has also continued to misrepresent family-based immigration and the diversity visa program, in the process disparaging entire countries and continents and scuttling a bipartisan agreement on DACA.

It's time for the White House and Republican Congressional leaders to show real courage and pass the bipartisan solutions that our entire country needs.

The Illinois Coalition for Immigrant and Refugee Rights is a statewide coalition of more than 130 organizations dedicated to promoting the rights of immigrants and refugees to full and equal participation in the civic, cultural, social, and political life of our diverse society.
