Citizenship Workshops in April

In light of the recent influx of legal permanent residents wanting to become American citizens to make their voices heard in the November elections, the Illinois Coalition for Immigrant and Refugee Rights (ICIRR) and partners will be hosting citizenship workshops across the city of Chicago to aid those taking the step to change their status.

Who: ICIRR along with Juntos Podemos, SEIU, the Mexican Consulate and other partner organizations.

What: Hosting citizenship workshops for the month of April dedicated to the influx of permanent residents with the goal to become U.S. citizens in order to vote in the November presidential elections and make their voices heard.

Requirements for citizenship applications:

  •     Applicants must have been a U.S. resident for at least four years and nine months or be married to a U.S. citizen and have been a resident for at least two years and nine months.
  •     Applicants must bring a residency card, social security card, driver’s license or state ID, and two passport size photos.
  •     If the applicant has any arrests, they must bring in a certified disposition letter from the police department where the incident occurred.
  •     Applicants must also be prepared to provide information on trips made out of the country in the last five years, places they have lived and worked in the last five years, and residency and background information about any children or current or former spouses.
  •     The U.S. Citizenship and Immigration collects a $680 fee for applicants under the age of 75 and a $595 fee for those aged 75 and older.

When: There will be four workshops in the month of April. Various state representatives have been confirmed for the events.
