Compassion is Dead in the Party of Lincoln

The following is a statement by the Illinois Coalition for Immigrant and Refugee Rights (ICIRR)  on border spending bill and vote to end Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA)

A shameful day for House Republicans attacking the most vulnerable in our society - children, women and undocumented youth. The passage of the malicious bill would create a fast-track deportation process for children fleeing violence in El Salvador, Guatemala, and Honduras. This legislation would waste millions of dollars to unnecessarily deploy the National Guard to the border.  Additionally, House Republicans demonstrated that compassion is dead in their party by voting to end the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program established two years ago for eligible “DREAMers” who have grown up in the U.S.

The House Republican leadership’s bill provides neither the legal resources nor the humanitarian aid that these children need.  Indeed, the House bill would remove many of the legal protections that these children need to make their cases and win protection from being returned to dangerous circumstances in their native countries.  And because the federal resources to care for these children come from existing refugee appropriations, other refugees could lose vital services if the House bill passes and no further funding is made available.

“Today’s vote is a clear indication that President Obama must take immediate action to alleviate the suffering of our families and children,” said ICIRR’s CEO Lawrence Benito.  “It is clear that compassion is dead in the Party of Lincoln and cruel politics rules.”
